Protect the iron, attachments, and technology that keep work moving.
Excavators, dozers, graders, skid steers, loaders, compactors, trench boxes, attachments, lasers, and tools move between yards, trailers, and jobsites. Contractors equipment coverage—often written as inland marine—is built for mobile property, but the schedule, valuation, deductibles, exclusions, and security conditions determine how it responds.
Far North Insurance helps excavation and construction companies turn an equipment list into a deliberate coverage plan before theft, rollover, fire, flood, or another covered loss stops production.
The schedule is the foundation.
For each major item, document the year, manufacturer, model, serial number, ownership or lease status, lienholder, value, storage location, and typical radius of operation. Include attachments and support equipment that are easy to overlook.
- Excavators, dozers, graders, loaders, backhoes, skid steers, and compactors
- Buckets, breakers, thumbs, grapples, blades, rippers, and specialty attachments
- Trench boxes, shoring components, pumps, generators, light towers, and compressors
- GPS grade-control systems, rovers, lasers, locators, tablets, and survey equipment
- Trailers, service bodies, fuel equipment, small tools, and employee-owned tools when applicable
- Rented, leased, borrowed, or newly acquired equipment
Seven policy details worth deciding on purpose.
- Valuation: Is a covered total loss settled at actual cash value, replacement cost, agreed amount, or another basis, and does the schedule cap recovery?
- Deductibles: Are there separate flat, percentage, theft, wind, flood, or catastrophe deductibles, and can one event trigger more than one?
- Covered locations: How does the form treat the home yard, temporary storage, unattended jobsites, transit, and work outside the normal territory?
- Rented equipment: What limit applies, and how are rental-agreement obligations, continuing charges, loss of use, and damage waivers handled?
- New purchases: Is there temporary automatic coverage, for how long, at what limit, and with what reporting deadline?
- Theft controls: Are immobilizers, key controls, fencing, lighting, GPS tracking, alarms, or police reports required?
- Downtime: Are rental reimbursement, extra expense, or business-income options available when a covered loss interrupts work?
Coordinate the truck, trailer, and machine.
A hauling loss can involve the power unit, trailer, cargo or mobile equipment, and damage to others. Those pieces may sit in different policies. Review commercial auto, trailer physical damage, cargo or property-in-transit provisions, and contractors equipment together so ownership and valuation are consistent.
Know where equipment coverage may stop.
No policy covers every cause of loss. Wear and tear, gradual deterioration, mechanical breakdown, tires or tracks, water, flood, employee theft, voluntary parting, unattended property, and faulty repair may be excluded or limited depending on the form. Ask for the policy language instead of relying on the coverage label.

Update the schedule after purchases, sales, trades, leases, and major attachment changes—not only at renewal. Then call Far North Insurance at 701-237-6651 to discuss owned, rented, leased, and borrowed equipment. Coverage descriptions are general; actual coverage is subject to policy terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions, and availability varies by carrier and risk.
Damage to the machine, continuing rental charges, loss of use, transportation, and contractual responsibility may be handled differently. Review the rental agreement and policy before taking possession, especially when the unit value exceeds the blanket rented-equipment limit.
They may be covered if the form, location, limit, deductible, and theft conditions apply. Small tools often have a blanket limit that should be compared with their actual replacement cost.
